Why You Should Remove Ads From Your Blog

Ad networks are one of the most inefficient ways to make money online. In this video, I’m going to explain why bloggers use ads, why they aren’t effective, and some alternatives to consider.

Are you looking to make money from your blog? Most publishers turn to ad networks as their primary source of revenue, but they rarely make a significant income. Read on below for several reasons to remove ads, and discover alternative strategies that are proven to be more effective.

Gateway Sites vs. Niche-Based Sites

One of the reasons blogs use ads is because they see sites like Google, Bing, and Yahoo using them. These are some of the most popular websites online, so displaying ads must be a good idea, right? Wrong… at least when it comes to niche-based websites.

You see, there is a big difference between Google and your blog. Search engines are “gateway sites” and are rarely the final destination for visitors. Their ads are being displayed to an audience that is still in “research mode”. Visitors to your blog are usually in more of an “engaged mode”. This makes a dramatic difference in how they interact with ads on your site.

People are far more likely to click ads when they are still looking for a solution. When they land on your blog, people are focused on your content. Ads are seen as a distraction and are far more likely to be ignored. The fact is, your business is about building relationships with your visitors, so blindly sending them away doesn’t make sense anyway.

Ad Networks Are Incredibly Inefficient

Even if we assume the ads on your website will get a decent click rate, they are still inefficient. Anytime a sale results from an ad being clicked, the profits have to be split three ways. The advertiser profits from sales that result from the ad campaign, the ad network gets paid for displaying the ads, and you get whatever is left.

Contrast this with affiliate marketing or selling your own products. Affiliate marketing is more efficient with only two parties involved, and obviously selling your own products takes this even further. As if that wasn’t enough, promoting products directly to your audience is far more likely to convert visitors into paid customers.

Ads Are For Advertisers, Not Publishers

Now, I don’t want to give you the wrong idea. Advertisements aren’t all bad. They are great for advertisers. Especially those that take advantage of advanced analytics to ensure their ad campaigns are profitable. They just aren’t designed to reward blog publishers.

How To Make Money With A Niche Website

The real money is in the relationship you have with your audience. Start with providing remarkable value and finding out how you can serve them better. With that information, you can promote affiliate products that meet their needs, or create your own products to provide even more value.
