Avoid Spending A Fortune To Make A Fortune

This post was inspired by something I read on the “Warrior Forums” today. Someone was asking what they should do with their last $150 to start a business online. Apparently this person had spent around $9000 on various courses, and had not yet had success. I’m not sure if they were just trying to make a point, or if this was a true story. Either way, this would not be the first time something like this has happened.

Far too many entrepreneurs are spending a small fortune in order to learn how to make money online. It doesn’t have to be this way. In fact, you can start your online business for next to nothing. I actually believe it’s your “lowest-risk” business opportunity, but only if you do it right.

The Internet Has Changed The Game

The Internet is revolutionary for business because it’s inexpensive to get started. You can have a website up and running for as little as $5/month. You don’t need employees, office space, or a big investment in infrastructure. In fact, I think it’s safe to say that starting an online business is considerably less risky than offline alternatives.

Unfortunately, people seem to take an offline approach when starting an online business. They start by saying, “well, I’ll probably need a few thousand dollars to start a business”, and then they find ways to spend that money. Needless to say, there are plenty of Internet marketing gurus that are ready and willing to take advantage of this mentality.

Money Should Not Replace Taking Action

It feels good to spend money towards achieving a goal, but that doesn’t make it a good decision. We all do it, but that doesn’t make it right. If we want to get into shape, we buy all the fancy running clothes and look for an expensive treadmill. When we want to learn a new sport, we buy the best gear. We consistently fail to realize that our favorite athletes could probably run circles around us while wearing flip flops and a parka.

This flawed mentality crosses over into business. We all think that spending money is ok, because we are doing it in order to make money. It’s an investment, right? The truth of the matter is, most people spend money to avoid taking action. It’s far easier to put an expense on the credit card than to get down to work. As my dad says, “borrowing money often signals of a lack of creativity”.
